Lockheed Martin Chairman, President and CEO Jim Taiclet joined the Reagan National Defense Forum to discuss the pivotal role of space in national security and the global economy during the panel titled, “Securing the High Ground: Space Capabilities and the Space Economy.”

?
During the panel, Taiclet underscored the essential role of space in safeguarding national security, powering the global economy, and driving scientific exploration. He highlighted the growing risks to space assets as adversaries develop advanced anti-satellite and cyber capabilities, threatening systems vital to U.S. military and economic strength.?

?

During the discussion, Taiclet highlighted several of Lockheed Martin’s strategic initiatives to ensure U.S. leadership in the evolving space domain:?

  1. Strengthening Resilience: Lockheed Martin is advancing technologies that protect space assets against both physical and digital threats. For example, initiatives like 5G.mil enable secure, direct satellite-to-handset communication, bypassing vulnerable terrestrial networks.?

  2. Accelerating Innovation: The company is committed to rapid upgrades and dual-use technologies. Taiclet described the ability to enhance existing systems, such as nuclear missile sensing satellites, every three to six months by leveraging both digital and physical advancements.?

  3. Expanding the Space Economy: Through partnerships with government and non-traditional tech companies, including Intel, IBM, and, Lockheed Martin is integrating diverse capabilities to drive economic growth and bolster military readiness.?

  4. Diverse Partnerships: Lockheed Martin collaborates with traditional defense firms and emerging tech companies to pioneer scalable solutions, including lower Earth orbit satellite networks and autonomous systems like collaborative combat aircraft.

Lockheed Martin’s focus on innovation and resilience aims to ensure the United States remains ahead of emerging threats, from anti-satellite weapons to cyberattacks. As Taiclet explained, “If you want to have joint all-domain operations, it's essential that we link assets in a way that is resilient, multi-path, and invulnerable to physical damage, cyber and digital damage.”

?The company’s approach also incorporates anti-fragility principles—building redundancy and adaptability into systems to maintain mission readiness in the face of disruption.

As a leader in aerospace and defense, Lockheed Martin is uniquely positioned to deliver the cutting-edge capabilities needed to secure space as a critical domain for defense, commerce, and everyday life. By fostering collaboration between industry and government, Lockheed Martin is setting the standard for innovation and resilience in the 21st century.
